Hamlet - Response Journal

Response Journal for Act 1, scene 1 to  Act 1, scene 5

1. How does the play make you feel at this point? Record your emotional response(s) in a few sentences and then explore them for a few minutes, trying to figure out why you feel as you do.

I feel that the feeling of the characters are getting stronger and stronger. It is quite dramatic. I feel that i did not get into much of the writer's way of presenting the story. For me, the words Shakespeare chose to use was nice but it was also quite complicated. The story is interesting. Only first scene, makes me want to know the ending.

2. In what situations have you felt similar to the characters? What persons, places, or ideas from your own experiences came to your mind while you were reading this portion of the play? Try to list at least three associations, but don't worry about trying to figure out why they came to mind. Just accept that they occur.

A. Similar to Hamlet, he has his best friend and when they went out following the ghost, Horatio was stopping him. Hamlet did not listen and he became angry with his friend. It was like me and my brother. We are twin so we did everything together. Sometimes i became angry at my brother but i could find other ways out.
B. Similar to Horatio, when we have best friend, we care for them and we do not want them to be in trouble or get hurt. I like to warn my friend and be their listener. When my friend wants to be relieve, they just release everything out. It was similar to Horatio trying to help Hamlet.
C. Similar to Laertes and Ophelia, me and my brother. I am like Laertes, i warn my brother to don't really have a girlfriend now because he is still young. I sometimes give him advice too especially when he asks for my help.

3. What portions of Shakespeare's language attracts your attention? These might be individual words, phrases, lines, scenes, or images. Make note of whatever features draw your attention. Speculate for a few minutes about what you think they might mean.

He use variety of words like 'tis, nay, and more. We will not see these words in today story books. These words are also the ones that caught attentions. These words are uncommon and it makes me want to stop to make it clear.

4. Make note of any portion of the play, its language, or events that cause you problems. Note any questions that you might ask.
Shakespeare language is not like others. His language is different from today language and it is harder to understand. For me, english is not my first language so i think it is harder too. Problem that i might face in the play is the understanding part.
